Resumen:
The study has as its theme the experience of João Nery in the process of constituting a
trans gender identity, in Brazil, between the 1970s and 1980s. This problematization is
based on the memories narrated in the work Erro de Pessoa: Joana ou João? (1984), as
well as press speeches, especially the newspapers Folha de São Paulo, Jornal do Brasil,
Diário de Pernambuco and Lampião da Esquina. The autobiographical source, in this
case, opened the way for a discussion about the social and historical ties related to the
way Nery wanted his trajectory to be remembered, as well as, it allowed him to
understand his connection with different groups and movements, in addition to editorial
aspects of his work. In this sense, a reflection was made on the historical trajectory of
this individual, analyzing speeches, the conditions of possibilities and the social
meanings surrounding the transsexual being in the context of the final decades of the
century XX.
