Resumo:
Severity degree of malocclusions in schoolchildren from the municipal network of Patos/PB. The evaluation of dental occlusion, considering the public health scenario, aims to define the need and priority of treatment and obtain informations concerning the appropriate planning of resources needed to treat the public. With this in mind, the goal of this work is to appraise the degree of severity of poor dental occlusions in students of Patos municipal education system, state of Paraíba. Methods: the sample is formed by 256 students, all of them at age 12, both genders. The collection of data was realized in a school environment, under artificial lighting, with the kid towards the examiner sit on a chair. Was used the Dental Aesthetics Index (DAI) with the purpose of estimate the degree of severity and needing of dental treatment in student population. Results: it was observed that 75% of children presented some sort of poor dental occlusion. The highest degree of stringency, where the dental treatment is indispensable, was found in 42 students (16,5%) of the totality. Most of children (54,6%) presented normal molar relations. The dental crowding, in the previous segment, was the most frequent occlusal alteration (48,8%), followed by the accented anterior maxilla overjet (47,2%). The poor dental occlusion with less happening was the accented mandibular overjet (1,5%). Conclusion: the majority of evaluated students is framed in severity degree II, where the poor occlusion is defined and the dental treatment is elective. Due to the high prevalence, interceptive measures and continue public health programs are necessary.
