Studies of the Brazilian fauna have been of great importance for the preservation of the
environment, among them it is distinguished the anatomical knowledge of and the
physiological one of diverse species. This work had as objective generality to make a study
of the topographical anatomy o f the cone to medular in foxes (Dusicyon vetulus), therefore
this information is valuable to carry through with more security disgnostic procedures and
anaesthetics.Between the anesthetical techniques, the epidural anesthesia is one of that it
demands the knowledge of the anatomy of the involved region, therefore has a great
variation o f the ending of the spinal marrow in the species. Used four foxes (Dusicyon
vetulus), made and femal, adults, captured for the responsible ones o f the Laboratory of
Virology of the Federal University of Campina Grande, Campus of Patos - Paraiba -
Brazil, as license of IBAMA N ° 332/2001, in the year of 2002 and later directed to the
Laboratory of Anatomy of the Domestic Animals o f the same University. The animals
were fixed and conserved in solution of formol 10%. Dissected it skin, was removed the
musculatura of the dorsal region for exposition o f all the vertebral column. Measured after
that the longitudinal length (skull-volume) and transversal line (latero-lateral) o f the space
lombossacro. Longitudinally the diameter varied o f 4,64mm 6,98mm, with the average of
5,72mm. Transversally it varied of 6,59mm 9,41mm, with the average of 7,50mm. To
establish the end o f the spinal marrow and to measure the length o f the cone to medular the
vertebral canal was opened all. The base o f the cone to medular is situated between 5a and
6a lumbar vertebrae in 3 (75%) animal ones and one (25%) animal one is to the level o f 5a
lumbar vertebra. In all the studied animals the apex was situated to the level o f 6a lumbar
vertebra. The length o f the cone to medular varied of 9,79mm the 17, 59mm, with average
of 12,72mm. On the basis o f these results can be concluded that the accomplishment of the
epidural anesthesia in the space is possible lombossacro with security.
