Resumen:
The law 9.433 / 97 established the National Water Resources Policy and was a landmark for the management of these resources in Brazil, adopted as a management unit the hydrographic basins and implemented the decentralized model, which has as principal the integration among all the social actors involved in the context of the ba- sins. In order for the management of these hydrographic basins to be efficient, it is necessary to have as much information about their operating dynamics as possible, and this information is obtained through the characterization, be it physiographic, mor- phometric or hydrographic, and one of the most used forms of making these charac- terizations are the so-called geographical information systems (GIS).Through this tool it is possible to obtain specialized data about the study area, be it relief, declivity, drain- age, etc, facilitating the interpretation of the phenomena that occur in the basin and assisting in decision making on the use of water resources. From this context, the pre- sent work had the objective of characterizing the watershed of the Papocas River, south coast of the State of Paraíba, using the geoprocessing tool, through the SIG’s Qgis, Grass Gis and SAGA, from two digital models of elevation, one extracted from topographic charts on the 1: 25,000 scale, and the other from SRTM radar images, whose spatial resolution is 30 meters, in order to compare the results and find out which one is best suited for this type of work.
