Resumo:
This thesis, entitled 'Diseases of equidae in Brazilian semiarid', was prepared in three
chapters, concerning to three scientific articles. The first two articles are published in
the journal Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira, and the third article is awaiting response of
reviewer in the same journal. The objective of this thesis is to promote the knowledge of
diseases that affect equidae in the semiarid region of northeastern Brazil with in the
scientific community and those persons involved with equidae. For this we did a
retrospective study by collecting data, stored in the Veterinary Hospital of Federal
University of Campina Grande (UFCG) between the years 2002 and 2012. The first
chapter consists of the article entitled 'Skin diseases in equidae in the Brazilian
semiarid', which results determined that the leading equidae skin diseases in the region
are traumatic wounds, pythiosis, sarcoid and habronemiasis with different frequencies
in the three species. The second chapter it is an article reporting diseases that affect
donkeys and mules. In this article, entitled 'Diseases in donkeys and mules in the
Brazilian semiarid', it was concluded that these two species are most affected by
traumatic wounds, fractures and colic. In the third chapter entitled 'Diseases of horses in
the Brazilian semiarid', describes the diseases that affect this species and the results
show that arthritis, colic, tendinitis/tenosynovitis, pythiosis and traumatic wounds are
the most common diseases.
