Resumen:
This study aimed to determine the prevalence of antibodies to Brucella canis in dogs in the city of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil, and metropolitan area, and to identify risk factors associated with seropositivity. Sera from 416 dogs attended at veterinary clinics during the period from March to November 2011 were tested for evidence of anti-B. canis antibodies by agar gel immunodiffusion test (AGID) using lipopolysaccharides and proteins from Brucella ovis, strain Reo 198, as antigen. The frequency of anti-Brucella canis was 28.85% (120/416) occurring at a high level. The major acquisition 22 of animals through commercial kennels and/or informal creations suggests that a higher disease control is carried out in these establishments.
