Abstract:
Aiming to contribute to knowledge about mastitis in goats was done a review of the
disease and a study on properties of dairy goats where were analyzed epidemiological
and etiological aspects of the disease, in the state of Paraíba and in vitro susceptibility
of the etiologic agents to antimicrobial drugs. The literature review identified that the
main agents responsible for mastitis in goats are Staphylococcus spp and, according to
the presentation, the mastitis are classified as clinical and subclinical. The diagnosis of
clinical mastitis is performed by visualizing changes in milk and mammary gland and
subclinical form is diagnosed by direct tests such as microbiological isolation and
indirect tests, such as California Mastitis Test and Somatic Cell Count. The
bacteriological tests are considered the gold standard for diagnosis of intramammary
infection. In small ruminants, detailed protocols for treatment of mastitis are not
available and these are treated similarly and with drugs available for cattle. Spontaneous
cure, commonly reported in cases of subclinical mastitis, often does not occur in goats.
The field study was conducted in eight properties semiarid Paraiba. A total of 1990 milk
samples were submitted to CMT, microbial isolation, bacterioscopy exams and proof of
identification. The CMT showed weak correlation with the microbial isolation, 12.41%
of intramammary infections (IIM) and 1.88% of clinical mastitis were identified. A total
of 248 bacterial isolates were obtained, with a predominance of Staphylococcus spp.
Among these, SCN were the most frequent (86.89%). There were no significant
differences regarding age and the occurrence of mastitis. The persistent mastitis was
present in 9.34% of the animals. The highest rates of resistance were observed for
penicillin (62.61%), tetracycline (23.53%) and oxacillin (19.75%). Resistance to some
antimicrobials demonstrates concern about the emergence of strains with multidrug
resistant The occurrence of mastitis in goats of different ages and parity, the low
association of CMT with microbiological testing shows that many aspects of mastitis
goats are not yet understood and need to be clarified for the adoption of appropriate
control strategies to the specie.
