Resumen:
The year was 1766. The then governor of the Captaincy of Paraiba Real, José
Jerónimo de Melo e Castro made complaint to the Overseas Council of the
actions in the field of political Vicar city of Paraiba, António Soares Barbosa.
Now, working in areas that were not within their competence, that secular priest
confronted the civil authority should respect and obedience, as well governed
system of patronage and sharply ordered the Marquis of Pombal. This
adversarial relationship between the representative of the Portuguese Crown
and a member of the Church, we aimed to assess the tensions between
religious and political power in the Captaincy of Paraiba in Real eighteenth
century (1741-1785). Accordingly, with the main issue of the case study of the
power games of Soares Barbosa, their political arrangements with the local elite
and their inharmonious relations with Governor Melo e Castro, reflect how
contacts between civil and clerical authorities could lead political conflicts. Thus,
starting from an analysis based on Micro-history, the perception of the
peculiarities of the relaxation of royal orders as the contexts, specific situations,
we look at the fluidity of relationships, for political, economic, religious and
personal as appropriate opportunities conditions of colonial governance in the
era Josephine / Pombal, the ties between church and representatives of El-Rey,
the dissensions between central and local power.
