Abstract:
Aiming to collaborate with the knowledge of diseases of ruminants in semiarid we studied the
etiological, epidemiological, clinical and pathological features of an outbreak of salmonellosis
in calves in the state of Maranhão and outbreak of incoordination observed after vaccination
against FMD in cattle in the states of Paraiba and Pernambuco. For this study visits were
made in the properties in which they occurred. An outbreak of salmonellosis by Salmonella
enterica subsp. enterica sor Dublin is reported in calves in a farm in the municipality of
Timon, state of Maranhão. The morbidity and mortality of calves were 35.5% and 40.9%,
respectively. Clinical signs were fever, depression, anorexia, and, in some cases, respiratory,
neurological or enteric signs, or arthritis. The clinical manifestation period was hyperacute to
subacute. Main gross lesions were enlarged liver with multifocal to coalescing areas pale,
enlarged spleen, and presence of exudate in the cavities. Histologically, paratyphoid granules
were seen in the liver, kidney, and spleen. Thrombosis and bacterial aggregates in blood
vessels were observed in various organs. After the realization of the antibiogram the outbreak
was controlled by treatment with adoption of appropriate antibiotic therapy combined with the
correction of sanitary measures. In the study of the outbreak of incoordination, signals were
observed around 45 days after vaccination that was applied in the toracic and lumbar region.
A lump was found in the local of the vaccination. Twenty-four animals showed this signs, six
in Paraíba and 18 in Pernambuco. Six animals died and four were euthanized. At necropsy
exam were observed abscedative myositis with yellow irregular areas to multifocal coalescing
a white liquid in the left muscle Longissimus lumborum (two animals) and yellowish firm
mass compressing the spinal cord between vertebrae T11 and T12 (one animal) and L3 and
L5 vertebrae (one animal). The myositis and the pyogranulomatous paquimeningitis were
characterized by multifocal to coalescing areas showing clear spherical spaces of various sizes
centrally located corresponding to the oil adjuvant of FMD vaccine removed by histologic
processing. It has been determined the diagnosis of spinal cord compression secondary to
vaccine granuloma.
