Resumo:
The research aimed to study the adaptability and productive performance and
characteristics of the Soinga sheep coat in comparison to Santa Inês. The work was
conducted in the sheep sector of the Experimental Farm Research Center for the
Development of the Semi-Arid Region (NUPEÁRIDO) of the Rural Health and
Technology Center (CSTR) of the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG),
located in the city of Patos, PB, Brazil . The region has a BSh climate. Twenty-four male,
non-castrated sheep, Santa Inês and Soinga, vaccinated for clostridiosis and evermined
were used, 12 per genetic group, kept in a confinement masonry shed with asbestos tile
in individual 1 m² stalls, 15 days of adaptation and 45 trial period. In the first chapter, a
completely randomized design (DIC) was used, with a 2 x 2 factorial with repeated
observations over time, with two genetic groups (Santa Inês and Soinga) and two diets
roughage: concentrate (50:50 and 70:30) , the assessment of adaptability Respiratory
frequency (RF), rectal temperature (TR), surface temperature (TS), black globe
temperature index and humidity (ITGU) showed that the Soinga sheep were
physiologically adapted, similar to Santa Inês in confinement to the climate of the
Brazilian semiarid region. In the second chapter, the objective was to evaluate the
productive performance of Soinga in comparison to Santa Inês finished with two levels
of concentrate, a randomized block design (DBC) was used, and the Santa Inês genetic
group showed better productive performance when the diet presented greater roughage
level and did not differ when they consumed the same level of concentrate, in addition,
the diet with a higher level of concentrate improved weight gain, conversion and feed
efficiency. In the third chapter, the objective was to describe the characteristics of the
coat: Thickness of the epidermis (EEp), amount of sweat glands (QGS), amount of
sebaceous glands (QGE), amount of hair follicle (QFP) of the Soinga sheep compared to
Santa Inês. The design used was a DIC with a 2 x 3 factorial, being two genetic groups
(Santa Inês and Soinga) and three body regions (Side, neck and thigh). The histological
characteristics of the Soinga sheep coat do not differ from the characteristics of the Santa
Inês sheep coat except for the number of sebaceous glands.
