Resumen:
The performance and carcass characteristics of different goat and sheep genotypes
supplemented with multinutritional blocks in the caatinga were evaluated. Fourteen male, uncastrated male animals with a mean age of five months and with an average initial weight
of 18 and 20 kg were used, being 10 ½ goats (Boer x SPRD), 10 ½ goats (Savana x SPRD),
10 ½ sheep (Santa Inês X SPRD) and 10 ½ sheep (Dorper x SPRD). The work was developed
at the Emepa-PB station, Soledade-PB. The pH and muscle temperature, carcass pH, cold
carcass yield, warm carcass yield, cooling weight loss, biological yield and meat color did not
differ statistically among the genotypes. The final live weight, total weight gain, average daily
weight gain, daily supplement intake, feed conversion, cold carcass weight, carcass
composition, marbling, finishing and renal fat were significantly different, where genotype ½
(Dorper x SPRD) were higher than the other genotypes. Comparing all evaluated genotypes, it
was observed that ½ animals (Dorper x ½ SPRD) had superior biological performance to the
other genotypes, as well as better carcass quality in most of the qualitative characteristics, and
the Dorper genotype could be indicated for the Improvement of carcass production and meat
of the sheep herd of this region.
