Abstract

Environmental perception of the community around the RPPN Stoessel de Britto - Jucurutu - RN. The interactions between communities and the environment generate antropic actions that may harm the environmental sustainability and the fate of the future generations. Studies on environmental perception are fundamental to understand man x environment interrelations. This study investigated the environmental perception of members from the community near to the Stoessel de Britto Private Reserve of the Natural Patrimony (RPPN in Portuguese), whose results could help to delineate methodological strategies for future educative programs. Forty-five quick interviews and questionaries composed of objective and open questions on issues related to personal profile and environmental valuation and perception were applied on dwellers of Laginhas District, a village near the Stoessel de Britto RPPN. Part of them was not able to explain basic concepts, as for example the concept of sustainability, unknown to 72% of the interviewed, although 95% of them recognize the importance of natural resources to the community. Also, it was noticed no effective environmental education program as only 35% of the sampled dwellers knew what a RPPN represented and were aware of the legal restrictions concerning the exploration of the natural resources of a RPPN. Thus, it is concluded that the level of perception on environmental issues of the Laginhas District villagers is limited.
