Resumen:
The objective of this study was to carry out a retrospective review of case records of
dermopathy by mites that cause mange in dogs treated at the small animal clinic of the
Veterinary Hospital at the UFCG campus, Patos-PB, for this, the medical records of the
clinical study group were analyzed during the period of 2006 to 2010, gathering the following
information: breed, age, gender, seasonal factors and ethiological agents, in order to get to
know the characteristics of skin disorders caused by mites in these animals, and based on the
results, compare them to the literature findings. In the studied period 818 animals presented
skin disorders, of which 100 were diagnosed as positive for scabies, among these 100 cases,
76 were positive for demodectic mange and 24 for sarcoptic mange. Among the dogs tested
positive for some kind of mange, the mixed breed ones showed a proportion of 43%, and the
pure breed ones 57%. Regarding age, young animals (<1 year of age), had a higher
predisposition to scabies infection when compared to the predisposition of adult and senior
animals. Regarding the parameters of gender, and seasonality, were not verified any relevant
values that influenced the occurrence of any of the types of scabies.
