Resumen:
The general objective of this study is to describe how the oral production activities
presented in a textbook, which follows the communicative approach, are applied by two
teachers of an English private school, with beginner students. In order to investigate
this general objective, the following three specific objectives are proposed: (1) to
identify, out of the competences which entail the communicative competence, the ones
which are most focused by the two teachers during the application of the oral
production activities; (2) to verify if, and in what ways, the two teachers play the roles
ascribed by the communicative approach; and (3) to investigate if their teaching
experience with the communicative approach influences their practices, specifically the
practices related to the application of the competences and to the role played by the
teacher. In order to achieve the two first specific objectives, four oral production
activities applied by the two teachers were audio recorded and analysed. To
investigate if the two teachers’ teaching experience with the communicative approach
influences their practices, a semi-structured interview was carried out. The results
indicate that the grammatical competence is mostly focused, and that the two teachers
play mainly the role of informant (Silveira, 1999). As to the influence of the two
teachers’ teaching experience with the communicative approach, it was possible to
perceive that such experience is likely to influence them in diverse ways
