Resumen:
This paper analyzes the causes of dropout / persistence of farmers benefited by National
Program for Agrarian Reform (PNRA), held at the Settlement Patativa do Assaré, located
in the city of Patos / PB. Data collection occurred through questionnaires and semistructured
interviews. The work was divided into three groups, the first consisting of
families who dropped out of the settlement, the second group consists of the families that
remain in the settlement and the third consisting o f MST leaders. The causes of dropout /
stay were related to internal conflicts direct and indirect health problems in the family, and
country of origin does not adapt to the PNRA and the very limited federal government in
implementing the Program. The percentage of avoidance found in the Settlement Patativa
do Assare (15%) can be considered low when compared with the mean percentage of
avoidance in settlements in the states of Rio Grande do Sul (22%) and Tocantins (70%).
Despite the difficulties in the settlement settlers interviewed did not wish to leave the land
they received land reform, as well as families who left the settlement expressed desire to
return to the same or to another settlement, stating the importance and need for reform.
