Résumé:
Work performed at the large animal Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Campina
Grande ( UFCG ), Center for Health and Rural Technology ( CSTR ) , Campus de Patos - PB ,
from January 2002 to December 2012, with the objective obtain knowledge about brucellosis in
horses . The research was conducted through a survey of case studies recorded the routine
functioning of the said Hospital, through clinical follow-up in outpatient data gathering and the
notes recorded in chips and archived clinical records and the comments properly cataloged,
according to medical history and review animals evaluated. During the period studied was
observed sample total of 4,775 calls , of which 1,763 horses , a percentage of 36.92 % of the
cases, among these, 1,142 males ( 65.00 % ) and 621 females ( 35.00% ) , among which , 06
affected with brucellosis , which corresponds to 0.34 % of total equine assisted . Despite the
finding of the relatively low percentage of occurrences in the sample of horses affected with
brucellosis , the observations allow us to conclude that brucellosis is considered potential
zoonotic disease , a chronic, uncommon in horses , caused predominantly by B. abortus . The
disease in horses is characterized by reproductive disorders , mainly manifested by abscedantes
lesions in the cervical region , bursae , tendons and joints. Transmission likely occurs by
consumption of contaminated water and pastures , especially in endemic properties for bovine
brucellosis.
