With the aim of investigate the effectiveness of the ketoprofen on the preemptive analgesia
in cats submitted to ovariohisterectomy, were used 16 feline healthy, female. The
anesthetic protocol used was atropine as premedication and xylazine with ketamine for
induction and maintence of anesthesia, associate to lidocaine with epinephrine by epidural
route. The experiment was composed by 2 groups: preemptive group (PREG), was
administred ketoprofen, 2 hour before of the surgery by subcutaneous route, 1 mg/kg; and
postoperative group (POSG), was administred ketoprofen, also by subcutaneous route at
the same doses, immediately after surgery. In two groups, the ketoprofen was applied 24,
48 and 72 hours after the first one. In all animals were measured during the first ten
postoperative days, once a day, always at the same time, the heart and respiratory rate and
serum glucose. The assess of the analgesia degree was realized by descriptive scale, with
attribution of one score for each variable at 0, 2, 4, 6, 24, 72, 96, 120, 144, 168, 192 and
216 hours after the final of the surgery. We also measured the surgical time, in minutes, the
variation in body weight, in kilograms, measured by the difference between the initial
weight (before surgery) and on the tenth postoperative day, and change in appetite,
evaluated on the basis of daily consumption ration in grams. The statistic analyses were
made with software Graphpad Instat. Before the results were not statistically different
between the groups, only clinically verified that the animals in group GPRE showed
greater comfort within 10 days postoperatively. It was concluded that ketoprofen promotes
postoperative analgesia in cats undergoing ovariohysterectomy and administration
preemptive and postoperative reduction provides early pain scores when compared to
postoperative administration only.
