Résumé:
Age estimation in dentistry: systematic review and case study. The forensic dentistry contributes significantly to age estimation and verification of criminal responsibility of the individual, changing their treatment in society, legal, criminal and civil system. The objective of this study was to evaluate the possibility of estimating age from third molar mineralization and skeletal age, verifying the most commonly used methodologies in the scientific community and its applicability in forensic practice. A systematic review of national and international observational epidemiological studies published until February 2018 was carried out using the descriptors "Third Molar / Third Molar", "Dental Age Estimation", Age Determination by Teeth "and" Greulich Pyle ", associated with a clinical case report. The databases PubMed, BBO and LILACS were used, obtaining 454 studies whose titles and two evaluators read abstracts. We evaluated 56 articles regarding the methodological rigor of the study by adapting the STROBE initiative, considering 23 of them. These showed the usefulness in forensic practice of different methodologies for estimating age from third molars and bone age. Many emphasized the importance of regionalized studies for different populations considering ethnic, nutritional, and hormonal variations. In the case study, the detailed description of the process of age estimation through third molar tooth maturation and skeletal age. Although the topic is well discussed, there are limitations in the dynamics of the process of estimating age and it is necessary to study more about the subject, which results in the development of new formulas directed to the studied population.
