Resumo:
The estimation of age in living subjects, with a judicial purpose, is one of the most
complex expertises in the field of legal dentistry and needs a multidisciplinary
approach in order to determine a guaranteed period of time that indicates the
chronological age of the person examined. The present study aimed to report an
expert case study in which there was a biological and documentary discrepancy. The
individual examined in this study presented himself as a Brazilian male, single,
student and native of Sousa, Paraíba. The responsible escort reports that he was
adopted as his son, but the lack of congruence between the date recorded on the
birth certificate and the appearance of the individual led the responsible escort to
seek the authorities for document rectification. Thereafter, the District Office of Sousa
- Paraíba, requested through an official letter to the Nucleus of Medicine and Legal
Dentistry, of the city of Patos/PB an expert examination for the estimation of age.
Age estimation was performed using the method of Nicodemo, Moraes and Médici
Filho (1974). The mineralization of the teeth was verified from a panoramic
radiographic image. Thus, it was estimated the stage of each tooth analyzed and the
corresponding time interval. It was concluded that the individual had a probable age
between 8.86 years (106.4 months) and 10.04 years (120.5 months). This result
shows a real divergence of the record obtained in his birth certificate, which pointed
out the age of 16.3 years (196 months), demonstrating the importance of this expert
analysis in the forensic and civil context.
