Contribution of panoramic radiography in the diagnosis of osteoporosis - a systematic review. Objective: To analyze the contribution of panoramic radiographic examination to the diagnosis of osteoporosis by means of a systematic literature review. A systematic review of the scientific literature of national and international observational epidemiological studies on the subject was carried out. Methods: To ensure scientific rigor, the systematic review was designed according to Guideline PRISMA and included search strategy, inclusion criteria, exclusion criteria, study identification, data extraction and quality evaluation of the studies. The search was performed in 5 online databases: PubMed, BBO, IBECS, Medline and LILACS of studies related to the topic, without language restriction and published until the year 2018. Results: Initially, 61 studies were obtained, which had their titles and summaries read by two individually calibrated evaluators. After applying the eligibility criteria, 18 articles were
evaluated regarding the methodological rigor of the study by the adaptation of the STROBE initiative. After the exclusion of articles with unsatisfactory scientific level, 7 articles were considered in this review. The studies that were selected reported that panoramic radiography is an imaging examination commonly used in dental practice and serves as an important auxiliary tool in the diagnosis of osteoporosis. Conclusions: The various studies have demonstrated that radiomorphometric indices evaluated in panoramic radiography can act as an important tool to diagnose low bone density. However, its use for this purpose should not be indiscriminate, since its accuracy for the diagnosis of osteoporosis is not yet totally reliable and further study on the subject is needed.
