INTRODUCTION: Punica granatum Linn (pomegranate) has satisfied the desire for
natural products, presenting antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The
objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the aqueous extract of
pomegranate on the tissue repair and on the control of the supragingival biofilm, in
the postoperative periodontal surgeries for aesthetic correction of the smile by the
technique of gingivectomy. METHODOLOGY: This is a pilot study carried out on 10
patients with indication of correction of the smile pink aesthetic, these were divided
into two groups according to the product used as a postoperative mouthwash. In the
test group, they used the aqueous extract of Punica granatum Linn (pomegranate)
and in the control group, the gold standard for this purpose, 0.12% chlorhexidine
digluconate. In both groups, patients rinsed 10 ml of each solution for 1 minute, twice
a day, for 15 days. Periodontal clinical parameters such as Plaque Index (PI),
Gingival Bleeding Index (GI) and Probing Depth (PS) were collected before surgery
and in the postoperative period of 7, 15 and 21 days. RESULTS: Pomegranate
extract reduced the number of dental faces with stained biofilm; reduced gingival
bleeding in the operated area and maintained the depth of probing at levels
consistent with periodontal health and lower than the control group. CONCLUSION:
Aqueous extract of pomegranate showed encouraging results as a coadjuvant to the
mechanical control of the supragingival biofilm in surgical gingivectomy wounds.
However, more clinical studies should be performed mainly with larger numbers of
the sample.
