Resumo:
Several governmental initiatives have been undertaken to include deaf people
in higher education. However, the admission of a deaf student in the School of
Dentistry has several difficulties, including the lack of dental signs in Brazilian
sign language (Libras). The aim of this work was to create specific dental signs
in Libras and post them on a website created for this purpose. This study was
carried out by a multidisciplinary team, composed of a student, a professor of
the Dentistry course, a Libras translator/interpreter and a deaf Libras professor.
After the search for the dental signs in the literature, it was observed that there
is no publication concerning Libras issue. Therefore, the first terms to be
produced were selected, and their technical concepts were explained to the
deaf professor. Thereafter, the deaf professor created the sign, which was
recorded by video and photographs. The signalization specific information was
described and published with the photos and videos on the website
“Odontologia em Libras”. It was concluded that the website production and
availability of the specific terms in dentistry characterizes the beginning of the
inclusion and permanence of deaf students in a Dentistry Course. This work
must be continued to permit the constant signs creation and addition to the
glossary, which will support the deaf people education and a better performance
of Libras translator/interpreter. Then, this paper contributes in a pioneering way
to graduate future deaf dentists.
