Resumen:
During embryonic development, a defect may occur in the formation process of the lingual
frenulum causing Ankyloglossia. This variation disturbs not only the movement of the
structure, but also physiological functions such as speech and swallowing. The tongue test (Law
13.002/2014) was designed in this context to check whether surgical intervention is necessary
or not. Hence, this study aims to evaluate the knowledge about this protocol of dental surgeons
and nurses who are members of the Family Health Units in the Paraiba’s hinterland. Indeed, a
parallel study was carried out using a survey composed of seven self-explanatory questions that
evaluate the awareness of the appraisal protocol of the lingual frenulum in infants. The research
sample comprised 70 dentists and 42 USFs nurses. Further, the data arranged in tables were
evaluated by simple statistical methods such as the Fisher’s exact test and the Chi-Square test.
Among all the 34 dentists and the 36 nurses interviewed, only 16 already knew the evaluation
protocol, 90% percent considered a specific protocol necessary and 91,42% had interest in
getting trained. After all, most of the professionals did not know the protocol, and consequently
had not applied before. Despite of that, the majority of them were interested in obtaining further
information about it.
