Abstract:
The objective of this study was to survey the prevalence of labial lesions of a
population of farmers in the Sertão Paraibano, also investigating possible
associations of the presence of lesions with sociodemographic and epidemiological
variables. The data collection was done through clinical examination of the lips and
interview. The sample consisted of 97 farmers, mostly men, feodermas, aged over
60, incomplete elementary education and low income. Of those surveyed, 63.9% had
lip lesions, the lesion most common actinic cheilitis (42.5%). The age presented a
significant statistical significance with thepresence of a labial lesion (p = 0.005), as
well as skin color (p = 0.0033), time of exposure to ultraviolet radiation (p = 0.043)
and smoking (p = 0.0013). It is concluded that the prevalence of labial lesions is high
in the studied population, which can be associated with both the environmental
factors of the region and, throughout the age, great exposure to ultraviolet radiation
and smoke. Thus, it is important to encourage work aimed at health education for the
prevention of labial lesions.
