Resumo:
Bruxism is considered to be an involuntary rhythmic, non-functional, spasmodic oral
habit, or a habit of squeezing the teeth differently from the movements of the jaw
during chewing and which can lead to occlusal trauma. Thus, the present study had
the objective of doing a study of bruxism in patients attending the Clinic School of
Dentistry Course of Universidade Federal de Campina Grande - UFCG, in Patos. In
addition, to diagnose dental lesions resulting from this habit and to study the causal
factors of this parafunction in these patients. This study was observational and
transversal. A population of 120 patients participates for convenience in this
research; of this total, 55 were diagnosed with bruxism (45.83%). The most prevalent
diagnostic criterion was the presence of wear facets on tooth surfaces, incompatible
with age and function, present in 40 patients (72.72%). The wear of occlusal / incisal
edges / cusp tip was present in 55 bruxism patients (100%). Anxiety and stress were
reported by 54 patients (98.18%). It can be concluded that bruxism can cause severe
damage to the structure of the tooth and consequently occlusion, and its origin is
given by a series of factors, being considered a multifactorial disorder.
