Frequência da estomatite protética em pacientes na clínica da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande.

Abstract

Frequency of denture stomatitis in patients at the Federal University of Campina Grande clinic. The prosthetic stomatitis is characterized by erythematous clinical alterations resulting from the infection with the fungus Candida albicans, usually affecting the hard palate region, and may be related to factors such as trauma, hyposalivation and poor oral hygiene, among others. The present study aimed to evaluate the frequency of prosthetic stomatitis in patients at the Dental School of Universidade Federal de Campina Grande through the analysis of medical records of patients using dental prostheses attended from March 2012 to April 2017. Data were collected on age, sex, skin color, type of dental prosthesis used and diagnosis of denture stomatitis. The results were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics and Chi-square, being significant at the 5% level. Of the 686 medical records analyzed, 84 patients had prostheses and, among them, 35.7% (30) had a diagnosis of prosthetic stomatitis. This lesion remained at levels similar to those of the genus. The age of the patients ranged from 24 to 89 years, with a mean of 49.2 years, with the age group being most affected at 40 to 50 years. Regarding the type of prosthesis, 70.2% used partial removable prosthesis, 23.8% total prosthesis and 6% used both simultaneously. The prosthetic stomatitis presented a statistically significant association with the variables skin color and type of prosthesis used (p = 0.024) and (p = 0.003) respectively. It is possible to conclude that there was a considerable frequency of prosthetic stomatitis among patients with prostheses and that the occurrence of this condition was influenced by skin color and type of prosthesis.
