Abstract:
The maxillary expansion associated with orthopedic forces, applied both in the maxilla
and in the jaw, improve facial balance. The maxillary protraction is indicated in
orthodontic treatment as a non-surgical alternative for correction of malocclusion Class
III malocclusion. This approach allows the orthopedic forward displacement of the
maxilla with resulting downward movement while the jaw is rotated clockwise by
correcting the relation of the apical bases and improving soft tissue profile. The jaw
traction can be associated with rapid maxillary expansion movements, intercepting
technique that helps in the treatment of malocclusion due to maxillary atresia, with the
purpose of establishing a harmonious balance between the dental arches. In younger
patients, this therapy gets better results when compared with older patients. This study
aimed to report the case of a patient in the young permanent dentition stage with
maxillary atresia, anterior and posterior cross bite and malocclusion Class III treated by
rapid maxillary expansion with Haas breaker and maxillary protraction with mask facial
Petit. The maxillary expansion therapy associated with maxillary protraction resulted in
benefits to the patient with regard to the correction of transverse deficiencies and
malocclusion Class III.
