The periodontal disease has a multifactorial nature that results from a complex interaction between pathogenic microorganisms and host defense. The host defense factors may determine the progression and the severity of the disease. Among this factors, the psychological stress has been attracted much attention of periodontists. This literature review had the objective to investigate the relation between the
psychological stress and immunologic and comportamental alterations that affects host response and contributes in the etiology of periodontal disease, based on BIREME and PUBMED data and specialized scientific journals, searching for publications between the year of 2010 and 2016, having as keywords: “estresse psicológico”, “doenças periodontais”, “stress, psychological” and “periodontal diseases” in combination. Were only included in this review the studies that are related to humans. It was concluded that major of this analyzed studies suggests that the stress may induce alterations in host response due to immunologic, compartmental alterations or both, making the host more susceptible to periodontal disease. However, longitudinal studies with larger samples are still necessary to obtain significant evidences and prove that stress may be characterized as a real risk factor to the development of periodontal disease.
