INTRODUCTION: The degree of development of individuals can be estimated using
specific data from physiological maturity as somatic age, skeletal, dental and sexual.
The identification of dental and skeletal age in dentistry has importance especially i n
orthodontics and facial orthopedics, since the diagnosis, treatment plan and
prognosis in young patients are based on the degree of skeletal maturation, dental
and growth potential. It’s known that chronological age and skeletal may not coincide,
so the dental age of information can aid in the treatment of patients with cleft lip and
palate. OBJECTIVE: We aimed in this study to evaluate the mineralization of third
molars in children and adolescents fissured of Paraiba by Demirjian and Nolla
method using panoramic radiographs. METHODS: From a universe of 253
panoramic radiographs were selected 194 radiographs of children and adolescents
fissured a philanthropic service of Paraiba. Radiographs were arranged in pairs of
children and adolescents with and without cleft lip and palate, of the same gender
and an age difference of 30 days, ranging in age from 5 to 21 years. Three calibrated
examiners analyzed the mineralization of third molars in accordance with the
methods of Demirjian and Nolla, noting also the type of cleft, bow and side influenced
the mineralization. In the data analysis statistical measurements were obtained and
was carried out to compare the groups using Mc-Nemar test and the Wilcoxon test
for paired data. RESULTS: There was a significant delay in mineralization of third
molars of fissured when compared to non fissured by the methods of Demirjian and
Nolla. There was no significant difference in mineralization of third molars between
the left and right sides, and arcs relative to the upper arch showed an early
mineralization when compared to lower. CONCLUSION: As a multidisciplinary and
comprehensive treatment, this study contributes to better knowledge about the ideal
time to carry out the orthodontic intervention in these individuals, assisting in an
individualized and more effective orthodontic treatment plan, considering the
individual variation and the delay in mineralization of teeth.
