Resumo:
In order to reduce the patients discomfort in the face of local injectable
anesthesia, there was a growing need for better topical anesthetics. Several
types are available for application before small procedures in dentistry and are
widely accepted by patients. The objective of this study was to compare the
topical anesthetic benzocaine 20% with a placebo, against the possible efficacy
of both solutions in the control of pain during the injection of a 30 gauge needle.
The randomized controlled study was carried out at Clinic School of Dentistry of
the Universidade Federal of Campina Grande (UFCG) with 16 volunteers. The
same patient underwent two surgical procedures for the extraction of dental
elements 18 and 28, in different consultations, in which benzocaine 20% was
used in the first consultation and the placebo in the second consultation, the
same anesthetic and surgical procedure was used for all the research
participants. The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) After statistical analysis of the
scores, we obtained that the anesthetic benzocaine 20% compared to placebo
obtained a significant difference in needle penetration in the bilateral maxillary
vestibule region (p = 0.02), already during the penetration of the needle in the
region of the palatal mucosa a benzocaine 20% did not present significant
difference when compared to placebo (p = 0.53).
We can conclude that there was no evaluation of benzocaine in the palatal
region, in the perception of pain, when compared to placebo.
