Development of permanent second molars in children with clefts in Paraíba. INTRODUCTION: The clefts involving the lip and/or palate is one of the main structural abnormalities and occur in about 1 in every 700 live births. To evaluate the development of teeth second permanent molars of children with cleft of Paraiba using the methods of Demirjian and Nolla. METHODS: The universe consisted of all children attending the orthodontic service of the Brazilian Dental Association - Section Paraiba. The sample consisted of 113 pairs of panoramic radiographs of children with and without cleft lip and palate, of the same gender and an age difference of 30 days, ranging in age from 3 to 16 years. All images were evaluated in darkened room with the aid of a 23 "monitor, performed by
three examiners calibrated at the same time, and calcification stages were determined by consensus. In panoramic radiographs were evaluated the degree of calcification of the teeth on the 2nd molars according to Nolla and Demirjian classification, which were masked so that data of patients not to influence the evaluations. in the data analysis statistical measurements were obtained and the comparison was made between groups using Mc-Nemar tests and Wilcoxon test for paired data. RESULTS: significant differences were recorded between the case and control groups, evaluating the second molars jointly and each separate second molar the case group showed a delay in relation to the dental development the degree of dental development.. the second molars obtained by Demirjian and Nolla method of Brazilian children with cleft lip and palate showed a significant delay. The right and left sides showed significant differences in the case group. The upper and lower arches significant differences, with the lower arch showing an earlier development in both groups when using Demirjian
method. CONCLUSION: Priority should be given a humanized care of the fissured children, evaluating tooth development individually, aiming at streamlining the diagnostic process and thus potentiation of therapeutic interventions.
