Abstract:
Relationship between intra-arch measurements and facial typology. Introduction: The morphology of the arches can present in various forms and can is related to the differential characteristics of each facial type, or even the width of the face. The dental arches can undergo adaptive changes every standard, something that should be studied for the prevention of possible bad oclusões. Objetivo: This study aimed to evaluate the existence of a positive relationship between facial type detected by Vert Ricketts Index and intra-arcs cross-cutting measures. Method: The sample consisted of lateral cephalometric radiographs and plaster study models of 60 patients aged between 18 and 30 years old, belonging to the postgraduate degree in orthodontics from FIP (Integrated Faculties of Patos) and 20 belonging to the standard mesofacial, 20 and 20 dolichofacial brachyfacial. The previous orthodontic treatment and anodontias permanent dental elements of the upper and / or lower arches constituted exclusion criteria. The registration of intra-arches measures was conducted with a digital caliper brand Stainless (China) properly calibrated, and the Vert index from the same radiological service. Results: Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) revealed no significant differences between facial types in relation to DIC values (inter-canine distance), DIP (inter-premolar distance) and DIM (inter-molar distance). The Pearson correlation showed that DIC values, DIP and DIM showed each other positive significance level in all facial patterns. Conclusion: It was concluded that there was in the sample, a direct relationship between the transverse dimensions of the upper and lower dental arches and facial type of the individual, but the significantly positive correlations between these measurements indicated that its increase or decrease obeyed an independent proportion of facial pattern, that is, when one tends to be higher, other measures also tend to increase.
