Resumen:
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible causes of presence of
hyposalivation in dental prosthesis wearers. Methods: An observational study was performed.
The survey was conducted in the city of Patos, in the state of Paraíba. The study population
consisted of 47 patients undergoing rehabilitation with Removable Partial Denture or
Complete Dentures. Patients were clinically assessed and the data collected were recorded in
a medical record search. For clinical diagnosis of hyposalivation, the analysis of the amount
of resting saliva was performed where the patient deposited saliva in a 0.1mL graduated
cylinder, during 5 minutes, spitting at each minute. Results: The prevalence of hyposalivation
proved quite high (42%); most patients with hyposalivation were female; 70% of patients use
drugs that cause salivary changes; among the factors that influence the hyposalivation, the
most significant were problems with the nerves and stomach problems, followed by known
allergies and eye problems. Conclusion: It was concluded that hyposalivation is present in
most patients over 45 years and mostly female.
