Resumen:
The present work studies the shear strength of an organic clay of João Pessoa, Capital of the state of Paraiba, Brazil, mixed with unslaked lime (CaO) and using different curing times. For determination of the shear strength of Lime - Stabilized Clay and for fin finding the optimun percentage of lime, testing cylinders wuere molded, cured and tested.
The testing cilinders were prepared with amounts
of lime varying from 2 t o 12% by weight, and tested at curing times varying from "0"to "180" days. The testing results have shown that the optimun amount o f lime was 8% by weight. Undrained triaxial tests of samples compacted at this optimun amount of lime, led to an angle of internal friction of 6° and cohesion of 0,60 Kg/2 cm . Undisturbed samples of the same clay, have shown with un drained triaxial tests, an angle of internal friction of 0° and cohesion of 0,04 Kg/cm . After 180 days of curing an increase of shear strength of more 1000% was obtained with an optimum lime content of 8%. A testingwith program cyclic loads was also conducted, for different amounts of soil- lime mixtures to determine the in crease in deformation modulus.
