Resumo:
This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effect of periodontal treatment on glycosylated
hemoglobin levels in patients with Diabetes mellitus and chronic periodontitis through
analysis of randomized controlled trials published in electronic databases, Bireme, SciELO,
BBO, Lilacs, Medline and PubMed until June 2014. Before obtaining the full articles, the
titles and abstracts were consecutively analyzed, which were selected according to the
inclusion and exclusion criteria by two independent researchers, who subsequently entered a
consensus. The search strategy resulted in 397 titles and 142 abstracts. From the obtained
abstracts, only 32 were randomized clinical trials, but only 10 articles had control group
without periodontal treatment and were analyzed for the methodology and results. After
application of strict exclusion criteria, strong evidence was found, at least to the level of
randomized clinical study, which can confirm the hypothesis that the glycosylated
hemoglobin levels in patients with Type 2 Diabetes mellitus and chronic periodontitis may be
reduced after nonsurgical periodontal treatment.
