Brazil is one of the world's largest food producers and Brazilian pig farms have been vigorously growing in recent decades, as a result of investments in enlargement and the substantial evolution in breeding productivity, as well as several acquisitions and mergers that have changed production in the country. In view of this, and constant observations of the way pigs are grown in the municipality of Pombal, Paraíba, there is an area in the municipality today, provided by the local town hall, specifically for pig breeding, where, according to the breeders themselves, about Fifty-five (55) families share the space in poor, poorly planned facilities with no basic infrastructure, where large numbers of animals are raised without meeting the basic criteria of animal biosecurity, and there is a need to propose a collective swine breeding that meets the minimum requirements for the production of safe food, since these animals are marketed in various establishments in the city, and according to information provided by breeders, for some this activity constitutes an important source of income, including the source of primary income. This study aims to describe the role of university extension and associativism in the founding of the Pombal Swine Breeders Association (ACRISPOM), the first association of pig farmers in Paraíba. The present reality of these creators will be discussed in this work and for this, semi-structured questionnaires were developed, focused on better understanding of their creation, as well as the main needs and, through the transfer of information, to assist them in the minimum requirements for production of safe food, and through zootechnical accompaniment to present associativism as an instrument for the growth and development of ACRISPOM. In order to compose the theoretical basis of the work, the extension projects approved by the Pro-rector of Research and Extension (PROPEX) of the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG), carried out between the years 2016 and 2018, were used.
