The lack of strategies of pavement conservation and preventive maintenance generates a
significant cost increase in the activities that aims to promote appropriate conditions of
safety and comfort for highway users. A Pavement Management System (PMS) includes
the necessary activities of planning, project development, pavement construction and
maintenance that assures safety, efficiency and economy to road users. The use of
Geographical Information Systems (GIS) makes it possible to integrate information of
several areas of knowledge, and contributes to decision making in different administration
levels. The joint use of GISs and PMSs constitutes a technological progress in data
generation and manipulation, becoming an essential tool for cost reduction in data
updating and replacement. In this work, it is proposed a method to integrate the use of a
GIS and a PMS, by means of a software interface that connects a GIS database and the
available information on the structural and functional conditions of the flexible pavements
of the federal highway system in Paraíba, in the northeast region of Brazil.
