Propolis is a balsamic and resinous resin that is collected by bees from the surface of plants. Currently 13 types of Brazilian propolis have been classified, taking into consideration their bioactive compounds, chemical composition and antimicrobial activities. The 13th and most recent propolis found, is the red propolis that has botanical origin from Dalbergia ecastophyllum and is popularly known as mangrove tail and quince, is found in mangroves and river slopes of northeastern Brazil, calling the attention of the scientific community due to its bioactive compounds against bacteria and fungi. Based on this premise, the study aims to present the biological potential of red propolis, as well as its chemical characteristics and biotechnological uses. Methodologically, the research is a bibliographic review conducted through databases such as LILACCS, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), accessed through the journal portal of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), and sites of intellectual properties such as INPI, Patentscope and the Espacenet, in addition to searches in Google Academic, and site that address the issue in question. In view of the above, it is concluded that studies such as these are of high importance since their information can be used as a basis for other future studies, in addition to presenting the main results of work carried out with red propolis in the food sector, the pharmaceutical industry and alternative medicine.
