Resumen:
The use of supplements plays an important role among practitioners of physical
activity, in the sense of maintaining health and fitness, increasing strength and
muscle mass and improving performance; however, in some situations, the use
of these products can cause harm. Thus, the pharmacist can help to explain and
guide the use of these supplements. Therefore, the present study aimed to
analyze the main benefits and risks of the use of dietary supplements for those
who practice physical activities and the role of the pharmacist. This is an
integrative bibliographic research work that was developed and based on the
analysis of scientific articles obtained from the SciELO (Scientific Electronic
Library Online), LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Literature) and Google
academic databases, using the terms: Pharmaceutical Professional, Effective
Promotion, Nutrition, Pharmacy, Physical Activity, Food Supplements. 74 articles
were selected and 60 were used, in addition to 1 book, with publications from
2017 to 2022. Studies show that supplementation can act to benefit people who
practice bodybuilding and athletes where food demand is higher. The use of food
supplements is explained by the replacement of nutrients spent during the
practice of physical exercises, increasing the amount of macronutrients such as
proteins and amino acids to support the ideal levels due to energy expenditure
and the supercompensation that occurs after exercise. consumption of dietary
supplements without medical prescription is very common in users of dietary
supplements and can be considered a public health problem. With this, the
pharmacist can contribute to the rational use of supplements, since they are also
marketed in pharmacies and drugstores where this professional is technically
responsible. It is concluded that food supplements provide benefits both in terms
of health promotion, but also can help in aesthetics in the user. But with their
irrational use, they can pose a risk to the health of the user, among them:
triggering thyroid problems, as well as causing liver, heart, kidney diseases and
even death. In this way, the importance of the pharmacist in guiding the user of
dietary supplements is evident, because in addition to providing correct
information on rational use, the pharmacist will guide regarding the correct
dosage and possible interactions with other types of medication.
