schools in Patos - PB, Brazil. The green areas are areas that have vegetation and
providing leisure and well-being for the public. In the Schools can still serve as a
basis for outdoor classes. The work was performed in 50% of municipal schools in
Patos, which correspond to a number of 16 schools, where they offer from the
Elementary School to the Elementary School II. The choice of schools was made
from a lottery, where 9 (nine) neighborhoods of the city and the district of Santa
Gertrudes were contemplated. The research began in October 2011, ending in
March 2012. The aim was to diagnose these areas to further educate the target
population about the importance of them. Initially, we performed a brief diagnosis of
the schools, and from there, the development of practical work. The areas were
photographed and a copy of each plant was collected for identification. Already in
schools that did not have a green area, a questionnaire was given to know the real
reasons for the absence of these areas. All schools were georeferenced. We
identified 18 plant families and 25 species, including trees, shrubs and herbs. Most of
them consists of ornamental plants. The most frequent species were: Ficus
benjamina L. (Moraceae), Melia azedarach L. (Meliaceae) and Senna siamea
(Fabaceae-Caesalpinoidae). The study further showed that the green areas in
schools consist of planting a few trees planted inside or outside the school, or some
small beds with shrubs and herbs. No there is a planing by the leadership of schools
towards the correct deployment of these areas. In some schools there is the serious
problem of limited space for this purpose. Therefore research was evident in the low
usage or interaction with these students, away from the increasingly living with
nature.
