Resumo:
The aim of this study was to analyze the use of teaching tools in the teaching of biology in public
high schools of the city of Pombal - Paraiba and how environmental education is embedded in the
teaching of biology. This research was exploratory, observational, quantitative and descriptive.
Data were collected through questionnaires 3 (2 for teachers and one for students) built on the
model of Likert scale with five levels of responses. A questionnaire was administered to students
(Appendix D), composed of 53 questions that are divided into 3 dimensions: teaching resources
in the teaching of Biology; Teaching of Biology; teaching of Biology and Environmental
Education. For teachers two questionnaires (Appendices B and C), consisting of 22 questions
grouped in 2 dimensions were applied: aspects related to the teacher; assessment methods in the
teaching of biology. The second questionnaire consisted of 27 questions related to Environmental
Education, which has the following dimensions: social and environmental practices in school;
teacher knowledge about environmental issues. Were interviewed (n = 6) teachers aged between
22 and 57 years. The students interviewed (n = 120) had varied profile in terms of age, between
14 and 20 years. The questions presented variation in the pattern of responses, and consequently
the score between them and among different levels of scale. Over half of the students (68.00%)
responded that they have much interest in the discipline of Biology. As for teaching resources,
students have much interest in the field classes (75.00 %). Biology (56.67 %) is the discipline that
contributes to environmental education in the classroom. The data reveal that teachers and high
school students from the city of Pombal Public - PB present, positive and negative dimensions of
attitudes investigated. It is concluded that teachers need better training for teaching Biology and
Environmental Education and students show up knowledgeable of environmental issues. Each
teacher should always work, prioritizing your area, for the formation of full citizens. Whereas,
the teaching of biology is essential to civic education and of paramount importance, and tends to
grow further with the passage of time and the evolution of science and society more harmonious
with the environment.
