Os "imersos na penumbra" da Madeira-Mamoré: narrativas da obra Mad Maria de Márcio Souza.

Abstract

The Amazon writer Márcio Souza in his novel Mad Maria (2005), weaves a fictional plot combining realism and satire when portraying the construction of the Madeira-Mamoré Railroad (EFMM), in the middle of the XX century, between to the Amazonian rainforest, a chapter in the history of Brazil that is still little discussed in historiography. The present work is divided in three moments of analysis of the historical novel: I) The discussions around the relations between History and Literature, in the historiographic field, according to the trajectory of the Amazonian writer and theatrical writer Márcio Souza, his place of writing, influences, and their stance in relation to history, politics and North region; II) The attempted construction of the railroad in the early twentieth century, specifically the effective from 1907 to 1912, and the historical moment of the publication of Mad Maria in 1980, discussing the translations, editions, productions and receptions of the historical novel in Brazil and the world; III) The analysis about how the characters elaborated by the author have a function in the narrative with parameter in reality, discussing the elaboration of these characters in their importance: affective and intellectual acceptance of the reader, by the mechanisms of identification and projection. For this, not only the characters of the novel will be analyzed, but also the author's own reflexes through the construction of the speeches of his characters. The objective of the research is to analyze the historical novel Mad Maria (2005), by Márcio Souza, discussing the pre-production of the work, the author, the unfolding of the publication and reception, how the construction of the railway was recorded by history , to the formation and investigation of the characters - fictional or otherwise - of the novel, inserting them as a production with parameters in reality.
