Abstract:
This work aims to present an analysis of Differential Calculus concepts such as limit
and continuity, as well as to investigate the students' perception of these concepts. Initially we
present the historical development of Differential and Integral Calculus, in which it was
approached from the first records until its great development in the 17th century. Subsequently,
we consulted three Calculus textbooks, where we analyzed and discussed how each one
approaches the concepts of Limit and Continuity. Finally, we present and discuss the results of
the research carried out with 20 students from the Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry Degree
courses at the Federal University of Campina Grande, Cuité-PB campus. In the research, we
sought to investigate the conceptual image that the students had in relation to the contents of
Limit and Continuity. In view of the results obtained, it was possible to observe that a good part
of the students expressed a mistaken conceptual image about the content, which points out
possible difficulties involving the teaching and learning of Calculus.
