This work, which addresses the teaching of Cartography in the final year of elementary school, has as its central idea, to understand the cartographic literacy process in the final year of elementary school and the problems involved. The participants of this research, teacher and students, are from the municipal school system of the city of Cajazeiras-PB. The theoretical referential of the research involves the cartographic approach; the formation of the teacher to act in the teaching of Cartography; the contributions of the school environment for cartographic teaching. The methodology of this research has a totally qualitative content, and is divided into two stages of data collection, one being the application of questionnaires and the other an interview. In face of the data analysis, we identified that the school, teaching environment, does not have the necessary equipment and materials in adequate quantity for the performance of the teacher in the cartographic area, besides the fact that the students present a lack of knowledge in the same sense
