Resumen:
Urban afforestation is treated as a set of ecosystems, natural or not, which includes planted
trees, squares and parks. With the rapid growth of cities, green areas no longer become a priority
for the public service, thus, putting the lack of them, cause problems related to the health and
well being of the population. The objective of this work was to carry out a floristic survey of
the existing trees in the Commercial Center of the city of Pombal, in the State of Paraíba, and
the application of a questionnaire to analyze the opinion of the interviewees in relation to the
current scenario of afforestation in the commercial center of Pombal. The methodology
approached was through a qualitative-quantitative perspective, with the accomplishment of a
field study with the floristic survey and the application of a questionnaire, in which the public
opinion on subjects related to urban afforestation was sought. Regarding the lack of
afforestation in the commercial center of the city, there are still numerous problems caused by
them, in which most of the trees there, implanted, are not suitable for the region, being of exotic
origin. The misinformation on the part of the population about environmental education, along
with the lack of planning and incentives from the public sector, show unpreparedness for the
daily management of local afforestation, affecting mainly the large number of exotic species
present in the Shopping Center. Respondents classify the Shopping Center as poorly wooded,
thus resulting in a high degree of dissatisfaction. The municipality has a need for educational
actions by the government, in order to inform the population about the choice and management
of the species used for urban afforestation and the elaboration of projects for the improvement
of the current green areas in the commercial sector.
