Resumo:
The work with reading in the classroom must be an essential strategic point to the students’ learning development. On this scope it is fundamental to the student, even after experiencing and learning to decode, that he practices this activity in school and be encouraged to do it in other circumstances. Therefore, considering that reading must be practiced in all subjects, this research shows the importance of literary reading, aiming to: develop the literary literacy in the final year of Middle School (9º ano), from the play “A Dog’s Will” (O Auto da Compadecida) by Ariano Suassuna, in order to contribute to the reader’s education. For this purpose, the specific objectives for the construction of the study are: to conceptualize literary literacy and clarify its relevance to the teaching of reading in Portuguese Language classes, in Middle School; to analyze the social criticism presented in the play “A Dog’s Will”, highlighting its contribution to the reader’s education; and finally, develop a basic didactic sequence for the literary literacy of students in the final year of Middle School, by means of the play “A Dog’s Will”. In this perspective, we used the following references for theoretical discussions: Cosson (2015, 2021), Brazil (2018), Duarte (2021), Silva Neto (2018), among others, which deal with the chosen topic. This is a bibliographical research, of applied nature and exploratory-descriptive-explanatory procedure. We concluded that the aforementioned play through the exposed social criticisms, and because it is a Brazilian Northeast cultural representation, becomes an instrument of paramount importance for the teaching of Portuguese, especially with regard to the reading matter, since it is a play known worldwide, whether through theatrical staging, the dramatic text or the films based on it.
