The present work seeks to show the influence of the Latin Language (LL) in the formation of the lexicon of the Portuguese Language (PL) in Brazil, since the discursion is essential to contribute to the teaching of Portuguese. In this sense, this research has as its general objective: To understand how the lexicon of the PL took place in Brazil, from the influence of Latin. And to achieve them, we listed as specific objectives: to describe the formation of the LL and its contribution to the construction of the Portuguese lexicon, to present the metaplasms, observing the etymological formation of the words, and to reflect about the teaching of Portuguese, from the historical knowledge of the language. Therefore, the theorical basis used was Banza and Gonçalves (2018), Faraco (2016) and others that contributed for the discussions about the historical course of the language; Bagno (2007), Cardoso (s/d), Ilari and Coutinho (2011) and others that discussed about the historical grammar, contextualizing Latin. For the reflections about the PL lexicon and the etymology of words the theorical contributions of Illari and Basso (2011) and Viaro (2004) was used. Finally, with the purpose of to understand and to discuss about the school activity and the PL teaching, we used the concerns of Antunes (2003) and Brasil (2018). The methodology used was bibliographical research, qualitative approach, its nature is classified as exploratory and descriptive. As a results of this research, we have the discussions and reflections, formation of the lexicon of the PL with a focus on the importance of Latin and its specificities, being important the insertion of this approach in PL teaching.
