A matemática nas reportagens jornalísticas: erros, equívocos e intencionalidades.

Abstract

We live in the Information Age, inserted in an increasingly technological world, where we are constantly faced with situations that involve Mathematics, whether in the financial, social, scientific, work, etc. Knowing Mathematics has become even more important, because with the internet the spread of news, advertisements, advertisements, etc., through digital media has intensified considerably and, with that, the chances of being deceived, understanding something wrongly, believing in fake news, among other situations, proved to be much greater and knowledge of Mathematics can help in understanding the veracity or not of some propagated information. From this, our work is situated in a problematizing perspective on the use of mathematical knowledge in reports or news published in different media and how this has an impact on life in society. Thus, our general objective was to identify errors, misunderstandings and intentions in journalistic reports and news and to point out critical reflections related to social, political, cultural and economic aspects of life in society. Specifically, our intentions were, i) to carry out an exploratory action of reports and news that used or presented themselves with mathematical knowledge as an element in their narratives, ii) to identify errors and/or mistakes in the use of mathematical knowledge in reports and journalistic news and, iii) to propose critical reflections from investigated situations that indicate errors or misunderstandings, pointing out the possible intentions. It was possible to point out, according to our methodological work of exploration of reports and journalistic news in internet media vehicles, that many of the information passed in the media contain numbers, graphs, tables, percentages, etc., that is, there is a lot of knowledge mathematicians used as a tool in journalistic work, showing the importance of this science in the area of communication, a tool for building critical thinking to deal with the immensity of information in numerous media in order to have a critical position in this context of today's world.
