Abstract:
The present master's work consists of an intervention research, with a qualitative
approach, in which the objective is to investigate the role of the designer in traditional
communities, analyzing the possibility of the transversal role of a white designer in a
quilombola community, in particular in Quilombo Grilo, to map its history, culture and
knowledge. It is considered extremely important to talk about the experiences of
quilombola communities, bringing to the research plan the perception of their
complexity, making it necessary to understand the context and the political and
social issues that surround the quilombolas as black people, and especially when it
comes to the designer being a white woman. It is also noted the importance of
subsidizing debates and reflections on the performance of Design as a
multidisciplinary, dynamic and social potential, aiming at its possibility of acting in this
environment. For this, there is an intersection of the areas of Design, History and
Anthropology, with the appropriation of qualitative approaches and the
interdisciplinarity and dynamics of design to answer the following question: Is it
possible for a white designer to build a transversal path in a quilombola community?
What is the role of the designer? How to build a common plan? For this, cartography
will be used as a projectual path and the perspective of the designer as a mediator
as a project philosophy, still aiming to have a non-colonial and anti-racist approach.
The research stages consist of an ethnographic stage, with a participatory
observation, combined with semi-structured interviews; the use of the participatory
design tool combined with systemic design, to trigger dialogues and correspondence
with the co-authors; and, finally, the analysis of the research through from the
triangulation of information to the perception of the observed impacts and the
effectiveness of the designer's transversal action for the construction of the common
plan. From the analysis, it was possible to perceive how the common plan was built
during the course of the research and to reflect on the designer's performance in the
field, bringing questions and notes to Design and the academic environment in
general.
