The EVA polymers’ residue (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) has suitable characteristics for
recycling purposes, transforming them into lightweight aggregates, which may bring benefits
to the constructed environment, such, for example, its exploitation in form of thermal
insulator for liners, as a blanket. This work was developed with the objective of evaluating the
performance and thermal efficiency of liners, using EVA particles + residues as sandwiches
plates in coverings of reduced models. The research was held in the experimental area of
LaCRA – Laboratory of Rural Constructions and Ambience of Federal University of UFCG
(Federal University of Campina Grande, in Campina Grande city, Paraíba State, between the
months of July and December 2014. 5 reduced models was constructed, using fiber cement
tiles, associated with 4 types of liners, but one without use of liner (control treatment). The
tested liners were composed of EVA plates, EVA plates + residues from the pulp and paper
industry (PPR), EVA plates + residues from the timber industry (TI) and EVA plates +
ceramic residues (CR). The collected variables were “dry and humid bulb temperature” and
“relative air humidity”, through thermocouples, and stored in the Campbell CR1000 data
acquisition system; for the external environment variables, bulb temperature (dry and humid)
and air velocity were measured. The thermal properties of liners were analyzed by calculating
thermal resistance, thermal transmittance, thermal capacity, thermal delay and solar factor.
This study has proved the good thermal performance of the liner composed solely of EVA as
thermal insulator, which showed high thermal resistance elements in its compositions,
through important results as increased thermal delay, and, at the same time, had the lowest
value of black globe temperature inside the models, in relation to liners composed of EVA +
residues.
